Intra College Poster Presentation Competition

Intra College Poster Presentation Competition 2015-16 was held in Chemistry Department, Christ College, Rajkot on the 13th January 2016. In total 24 groups of first year,second year & third year BSc students participated in the quiz. Entire event was judged by Dr. Naval Kapuriya (Assist. Professor Virani Science College) & Dr. Rajesh Kakadiya (Assit. Director DOE NFDD, Rajkot).

 

Inter College Chem-Quiz

On December 12, 2015, Chemistry Department, Christ College, Rajkot organized an inter-college chemquiz in which five colleges participated. From each college two teams were invited and screening was done. For the final round MVM Science College, Atmiya college , Gyanyagna college and Christ College were selected The five team names were Helium, Neon, Radon, Argon and Xenon. Four rounds of questioner General quiz, Visual, Audio and Rapid round was conducted. Team Radon (Christ College) bagged First prize while Team Argon (MVM Sci. College) was Runner up.

IPR Conference

National seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Patents & Trademark” was jointly organized by Christ College, Rajkot and SSIP, Saurashtra University, Rajkot on 21st January 2018.

The Symposium was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof. Pratapsinh Chauhan, the Hon. Vice Chancellor of Saurashtra University, Rajkot. He motivated students with his dynamic speech about SSIP which included recent statistics about start up and scope of entrepreneurship. Student start up innovation policy (SSIP) was introduced by Professor Yogesh Naliapara. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the seminar by Ms Meghna Parikh resource person session I & II. She is leading patent expert of the state. She delivered brilliant talk on general introduction to IPR and different tools of IPR. Mr Pranit Nanavati was versatile personality with diverse experience in engineering, management and patent. Mr Pranit Nanavati delivered excellent talk on patents and Trademark in Session III & VI. Seminar provided an opportunity to increase the awareness among the budding scientist, students, faculties and industrial delegates about structure and function of IPR. It provided vision to enhance the skill of self-employment by exploring an opportunity to develop their entrepreneur qualities. It was a platform for students to interact with IPR experts, which helped them to explore career opportunities associated with IPR which is widely expanding due to growth of industries.

 

 

Webinar on Environmental science

Department of Chemistry, Christ College and DBT jointly organized a Webinar on Environmental Sciences on January 16, 2021 at 8.30am by Dr. Sushil Korgaokar, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, V V P Engineering College, Rajkot. His topic was on solid waste and biomedical waste. Nearly 252 students registered for the webinar. Dr. Sushil delivered a very useful lecture about the waste and their problems to human as well as to all living creatures. A proper way of disposal of biomedical waste and electronic gadgets disposal was explained by Dr. Sushil and how to dispose the solid waste was also explained with diagram in his presentation.

One Day Online Workshop On Spectroscopy

Department of Chemistry, Christ College, Rajkot organized a One day Online Workshop Spectroscopy, funded by Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India (Under STAR College Scheme) on February 22, 2021 on ZOOM Platform by the resourse person Prof. D.I.Bhahmbhatt, Former Head and Professor of Organic Chemistry at Department of Chemistry, Sardar Patel University . 400 students pursuing their bachelors and masters participated for the workshop. Workshop started at 9:00 am with the brief introduction. The first session was from 9:15-11:15 am and the second session was from 11:30-1:45pm. The topics in the workshop were discussed from NMR spectroscopy with reference to the curriculum that included: Introduction; Principle; nuclear quantum number; equivalent and non-equivalent protons; enantiometric and diasteriometric protons; shielding and deshielding of protons; chemical shift; paramagnetic anisotropic effect; relative intensity of signals; spin- spin coupling and coupling constant; Deuterium labeling; applications of NMR; problems based on NMR.

Workshop on use of ICT in teaching and learning

Chemistry Department, Christ College, Rajkot organized a One Day National Level workshop on Use of ICT in Teaching and Learning Process on July 10,2021 funded by DBT (under Star College). During the session Prof. Mahesh Jivani, Head, Department of Electronics, Saurashtra University explained about the application of various tools that can enhance the teaching and learning process if appropriately used by the faculties. Detailing with demonstration was given in the PowerPoint presentation. Animation creation on the technical subject was taught to the participants. The session concluded at 11:30 pm followed by the question answer discussion. Participants enthusiastically participated in the session and all answers were satisfactorily addressed by Dr. Jivani

Webinar on Applied Chemistry

Chemistry Department, Christ College, Rajkot organized an Expert lecture by Prof. Pradeep Kumar Srivastava, Former Dy. Director in the Medicinal and Process Chemistry   Division of CSIR, Lucknow on Applied chemistry - NanoTechnology: Science of Future, funded by DBT (under Star College) on August 26,2021

During the session Prof. Srivastava explained about the application of Nanotechnology that can help to design a nano particle for detecting the cancer by using peptide coated Iron oxides. He also gave some wonderful examples of some Nano materials which are present in nature like Neem tree (Ag and Gold nano particals)

 

Hands-on Training -NFDD

Total 22 students attended the Hands-on Training programme organized by NFDD, Rajkot funded by DBT (under Star College) for six days where they were given theoretical and practical training on NMR and LCMS. It was very good opportunity for the students to learn theory and practical parallel for better understanding of Analytical Chemistry. Students gave excellent feedback that motivated us to organize such programs in future.

 

Workshop-Analytical Techniques

Chemistry Department in collaboration with Microbiology Department conducted hands on training workshop funded by DBT (under Star College) for all the B.Sc UG students from October 18-22, 2021.

The Instrument used by the students was Conductometer, Polarimeter, Flame photometer, pH meter, Colorimeter, UV Spectroscopy, Potentiometer.Total 65 students learn how to operate the different instruments and gained knowledge.

 

 

Industrial Visit

Almost every year Department of Chemistry takes the students to various industries within Gujarat area. Industries visited by our students are Emperus Ceramics Pvt. Ltd., Maps laboratory Pvt. Ltd. Halecon, Axwell Granito, Hibond cement industries, Holish Ceramics, Rhyeco Cpp,CSMCRI, Bhavnagar

 

 

 

Chem Draw: Students are given hands on training on the CHEM DRAW application for drawing chemical structures and identifying their Molecular mass, NMR, 13C and IR.

 

 

Workshop on structural chemistry: The main aim in organizing this workshop was to acquaint students with the use of software related to chemistry and improve their presentation. The workshop included use of software CHEM ULTRA for drawing chemical structures and the application of the software. The workshop included interpretation of spectroscopic data and deducing molecular structures.

Theatre-in-education: Technical Play: Preparation of CEMENT

A technical play on ‘PREPARATION OF CEMENT’ was staged by the Chemistry students of Christ College, Rajkot on the 4th September 2014. The purpose in staging the play was to make the technical concepts more interesting. In total 25 students participated in the drama. The aim of the play was to transform a complex industrial process into a simple fun loving drama which can create a keen interest among the students for industrial chemistry. The play consisted in showing how a cement batch is produced in the industry

The Act 1 included the ways of procurement and mixing of different raw materials involved in the process.

The Act 2 of the play showed about different process of productions.

The last and final Act 3 showed the work up process involved in the final production.. The concept of theoretical to theatrical was completely fulfilled through this act and motivated them to come out from tedious learning process to very innovative and fascinating learning techniques.
