VIKRAM SARABHAI CENTENARY CELEBRATION

To honour the contributions of this great scientist, Indian Meteorological Society has decided to organize various science related activities as a part of Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai Centenary celebration. Christ College was selected as a venue for organizing Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai Centenary celebration by Indian Meteorological Society - Ahmedabad Chapter (IMSA). The programme was jointly organized by IMSA - Ahmedabad Chapter & Christ College, Rajkot on February 18, 2020. The delegates comprising three senior scientists from Indian Space Research Organization, Ahmedabad, visited the college and delivered two hours long lecture on the life and work of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The programme was attended by more than hundred students.

DBT SPONSORED WEBINAR ON "CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS"

A webinar on condensed matter physics was organized on September 2, 2021. The speaker, Dr. S M Yusuf, D.Sc (Honoris Coursa), FASc, FNASc, FMASc, is an outstanding scientist from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai. At present he is the Director of Physics Division, BARC. The various researches conducted at BARC were then explained. Bose–Einstein condensation, quantum mechanical tunneling, Fermi Dirac distribution, phase space, quantum entanglement etc. were explained beautifully in simple terms.

EXPERT LECTURE ON "ULTRA THIN PERFECT LIGHT ABSORBERS AS COLOUR FILTERS AND MODULATORS

An expert lecture on "Ultra thin perfect light absorbers as colour filters and modulators" was organized. The speaker was Mr. Kirtan Dixit, an alumnus of Christ College and currently a researcher at University of Alabama, USA. In addition to the various techniques of fabricating ultra thin perfect light absorbers as colour filters and their applications, Mr. Kirtan explained the procedure for admission in prestigious American universities.

PARENT TEACHER INTERACTION

The Department of Physics conducts parent teacher meeting every year for the third year BSc Physics students. It is a rare opportunity for the parents, teachers and students to interact with each other. The one to one meeting enables the parents to get a firsthand knowledge about the progress of their children.  The variousopportunities available for higher studies in India and abroad are discussed in every meeting.

ORAL & POSTER PRESENTATION COMPETITION

The Department of Physics conducts oral and poster presentation competitions every year for the students of First year, Second year and Third year B.Sc. The competition enables the students to study in depth the frontier areas of physics.  It improves the communication and  presentation skills and builds self confidence while facing a group. The most important part these competitions is that they are attracted to research in the emerging area of physics.

EDUCATIONAL TOUR

The Department of Physics has organized study tours to places of interest such as the Institute of Plasma Research [IPR], Gandhinagar, Physical Research Laboratory [PRL], Ahmedabad, the Homi Bhabha Center of Science Education [HBCSE], Mumbai, the Space Application Center [SAC], Ahmedabad, the Forensic Science Laboratory [FSL], Gandhinagar, etc.

PHYSICS QUIZ

To reach out to the school students who are interested in physics, the Department of Physics conducts physics quiz competitions for school students. To shortlist the participants the competition is conducted in two levels. (1) A preliminary selection round and (2) a final round for the selected students. The final round is a mix of advanced level question-answer round, audio-visual round, identifying various physics phenomena, performing basic experiments etc.

ELECTRONICS WORKSHOP

The Department of Physics conducts electronic workshop for the third year physics students every year. The students learn to identify the different electronic components, verify them using multimeter and fabricates electronic circuits on PCBs by soldering the various components. They use various measuring instruments such as ammeter, voltmeter, galvanometer, multimeter, Cathode Ray Oscilloscope [CRO] to measure and verify the various circuit theorems. The hands-on experience enhances their basic knowledge in the field of electronic circuitry. It makes learning more interesting and effective.
