Mission

The Department of English believes in a family culture where each student is accepted and provided opportunities to develop holistically. They are encouraged to participate in the curricular as well as extra-curricular activities. Additionally, the students are trained and groomed for intra and inter-collegiate. Parents are considered as the prominent stakeholders for which Parent Teacher Interactions are conducted annually.

Introduction

The Department of English, Christ College, Rajkot, has a three year Bachelor’s program with specialization in English and Psychology as Elective I and Functional English as Elective II. The medium of instruction is English. Moreover, we are the only college offering ten papers of Functional English in Saurashtra region.

The Department has eight qualified staff members headed by Dr. Tisha Roy. It has four staff members who have acquired the Doctorate degree and two others are currently pursuing.

Best Practice

The Department takes pride in being the only college under Saurashtra University to run the Functional English Course for all six semesters.

Creativity is a unique feature of all the events in the department. Under the aegis of Ms. Sony Zala, staff coordinator of Creative Zone, a departmental club, myriad events are organized including Literary Triumvirate (Visual Extempore, Literary Quiz, Bookmark Making, Tiny Tales, Blackout Poetry, etc.), Reminiscence (celebrating life and works of the legendary writers), etc. The Department also believes in providing exposure to new trends in language and literature through expert lectures by renowned faculty members from different universities.

Major Events Conducted by the Department:

  • Two Day State Level Workshop on “Designing the UG English Syllabus: A Model for 21st Century” in collaboration with SUETA, Saurashtra University in December 2008. The resource persons were Dr. Jacob Tharu, CIEFL, Hyderabad, Dr. A. K. Singh, VC BAOU, Dr. Rajendrasinh Jadeja, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Fr. Vincent Saldanha, Ahmadabad.
  • Poetry Meet on 5th August 2013 with renowned Gujarati poet Mr Udayan Thakkar
  • National Seminar on Language and Literary Trends in 19th and 20th Century in March 2017. The resource person was Prof. Emeritus O. P. Juneja.
  • Workshop on Script Writing and Theatrical Conventions by Ms. Sonal Kulkarni in November 2017.
  • Dramatics and Performing Arts of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in February 2018.
  • Workshop on Theatrics and Voice Accentuation by Ms. Mukti Bajaria in July 2018.
  • Vividha – 2020 – National Level Conference on Recent Trends in Commerce, Management and Humanities in February 2020.
  • Commercial Translation Project in January 2021.
  • Vocational Guidance Program on Broadcasting and Media by Ms. Sheetal Chauhan (RJ Sheetal) in March 2021

Students have been introduced to new fields like:

  •  RJing and Anchoring (our alumni has been placed at Doordarshan, RED FM and Radio Mirchi)
  •  Media (annual field visit to radio station & media house)
  •  Adverts (ad analysis and creative drafting of print ads)
  •  Translation (a professional translation project of a book was undertaken and completed successfully)
  •  Dramatics and Performing Arts (Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice was staged by the college students on a city level which was the first play performed in English in the city)
