International Science Symposium 2016-17

Organized by Christ College, Rajkot (February 26 & 27, 2017)

An international symposium on Recent Trends in Science and Technology was organized by the College on February 26 & 27, 2017. The main objective of the symposium was to attract young science students towards research and to give them an international exposure. The two days symposium incorporated oral and poster presentations by undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars, in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Electronics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany and Bioinformatics. The symposium was marked by the plenary lectures in Physical and Biological Sciences by internationally acclaimed scientists. In all 1204 students and research scholars from India and other countries participated in the symposium.

The symposium began with a grand inaugural function graced by the presence of His Excellency Rev. Bishop Jose Chittooparambil, Bishop of Rajkot Diocese and the president of the function, His Excellency Bishop Gregory Karotemprel, Bishop Emeritus of Rajkot Diocese, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Saurashtra University and Chief Patron of the symposium, Prof. Pratapsinh Chauhan, Associate Director of Space Application Centre and Chief Guest of the function Mr.D.K Das, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Ada Yonath from Israel, Dr. Mehul Rupani, Other than Dean, Faculty of Science, Saurashtra University , Renowned Biologist Prof. B.J Rao from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Renowned Theoretical Physicist Prof. Raghavan Rangarajan from Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, General Manager of Federal Bank Mr. Anand Chag, Rev. Father Benny, Director Christ Campus, Dr.Yvonne Fernandes, Principal Christ College, Principals of various Colleges and Schools and Heads of various Departments of Saurashtra University besides the participants and faculty members of Christ College.

The inaugural function was followed by the much awaited keynote lecture by the Nobel Laureate Prof. Ada Yonath. Her awesome lecture on “ Next Generation Antibiotics” was an inspiration to the participants as well as the dignitaries. Four plenary speakers, two each in Physical and Biological sciences, were invited to deliver lectures on the current developments in their respective areas. The designation of the plenary speakers are listed below:

  • Prof. B.J. Rao, Senior Professor, School of Biological Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • Dr. Rajesh Patel, Department of Life Science, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan.
  • Prof. Raghavan Rangarajan, Department of Theoretical Physics, Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.
  • Prof. Probal Chaudhuri, Theoretical Statistics & Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

Oral and poster presentation competitions were conducted in various disciplines of science. Eminent professors from various universities and colleges were invited to judge these presentations. The cultural committee of Christ College, under the leadership of Dr. Daphne Fernandes, organized a very colourful and entertaining cultural programme on the evening of 26th February. The programme was well appreciated by the Nobel Laureate and the participants.

The two days symposium concluded by 6.00 pm on February 27 with the prize distribution ceremony.
