The year of uncertainties and constant fear did not dim down the spirits of the Women cell. We ensured that education and empowerment don’t get hindered. Therefore the inaugural ceremony of Women cell took place on 3rd October 2020 through the digital platform of Zoom. We head-started the inauguration by enlisting objectives, functioning and vision of Aarohan – The Women Cell of Christ college. This was followed by a blissful prayer reading and an extremely inspiring and empowering message from Principal ma’am - Dr Yvonne Fernandes.

The animator of Women’s Cell 2020 – Ms Pintu ma’am then enlisted the names of various Committees. Events organised by women’s cell in the year 2019-20 (previous year) were presented through power point presentation so as to provide proper insights to fresher’s and attendees alike.

Along with the inaugural in action, Women cell also organised an expert lecture taken over by MS DIVYANGNAKUMARI JHALA (Public prosecutor, High court Gujarat), the topic for the session being, “WOMEN CENTRIC LEGAL JURISPRUDENCE IN INDIA”. The key points from the session are as under:

  • With rights come responsibilities, and hence ma’am started off the session with various Rights of women enlisted and legalised in the Indian Constitution.
    1. Right to Property
    2. Right to report domestic violence
    3. Right to streedhan
    4. Right to claim custody of child
    5. Right to abort and seek divorce
    6. Right to live a life of dignity
  • To put into perspective how these rights can be exercised, ma’am further discussed some crucial ACTS.
    1. Guardian and wards Act
    2. Immoral trafficking Act
    3. Dowry prohibition Act
    4. The special Marriage Act (intercaste marriage)
    5. Foreign Marriage Act
    6. The sexual harassment of women Act
    7. Equal Remuneration Act
  • Eventually ma’am highlighted various schemes initiated by our government for women empowerment and amendments made in some laws Schemes
    1. SWADHAR Greh (A scheme for women in difficult circumstances)
    2. Beti bachao – Beti padhao
    3. One stop centre scheme
    4. Working women’s hostels
    5. Victim Rehabilitation scheme
    6. Sakhi scheme
    7. Ujjwala scheme

The session was open for questions and discussions. All the concerns of students were avidly voiced and satisfactorily answered by Divyangana ma’am and all in all it was a very enlightening session on the empowerment and education of women.
