Department of Bioinformatics

Alumni Banner

Born in 2002, the department of Bioinformatics started the first undergraduate program in Bioinformatics in Asia. Enormous data, generated from Genomics, Transcriptomics and Proteomics experiments, need to be stored, analyzed and interpreted. However, the research institutes and industries across the world were running short of experts in these fields. The department gives priority to the students’ skill development in these demanding areas. The focused area of the department is Biomathematics, Biostatistics including R language, Computer programing including scripting languages, algorithms, Database Management, Website development, Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics, and Computer aided drug discovery.  The sixth semester of the course is dedicated to Bioinformatics research project, which is carried out in the department or other national and international research laboratory. From the students’ research work, many research articles are published and some of them are awaited to feature in the international journals.

The department organizes various workshops, expert lectures, training programs, etc.  to groom students’ all-round development. Notably, the department has organized two national level Bioinformatics & Cheminformatics workshops, sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) & Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT, Govt. of India). The department is proud to claim that ours is the first department to organize such a workshop in the subject first time in India.

Most of our students have presented research papers in the National and International conferences, have attended Nobel laureate conclaves and have been inspired by interacting with them. Students visit various research institutes and industries across the country as part of their studies to gain practical knowledge. The alumni of the department are well placed in the world-class institutes and companies.
