Guest Lecture by Dr. Shirpa Baluja on 21st September 2016

On September 21, 2016 the department of Chemistry, Christ College Rajkot invited Prof. Dr. Shirpa Baluja, Department of Chemistry, Saurashtra University, Rajkot to deliver an expert lecture on “Nanotechnology and Nanoscience”. Madam explained to the students how Nanotechnology is related mainly to the size and how the property changes as size changes. Nano particles did exist but the word was not known. As the size becomes smaller the strength of the molecule or compound becomes stronger. For studying Nanotechnology Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Material Science & Biology knowledge is also necessary. Moreover Nanomaterials are based on Inorganic and Polymeric compounds. She explained about Scanning Tunneling Microscope used in Nanotechnology for obtaining 3D images. Different nanotubes like Carbon nanotubes is prepared from edible oil then ZnO nanoparticles are also prepared which have different shapes like needles, flower, spheres, disc, rods etc. Silica Gel also prepared from nanoparticles which are weightless and can float. As the particle size changes and become smaller and smaller properties, colour changes. One very interesting example was given by the Speaker about mottichur laddu were in based on the size the taste changes. In Switzerland Zirconia when converted to nanoparticle it looked similar to diamond which is sold in the name of Swaroski. Then she explained the benefit of nanotechnology in the field of Communication, Cosmetics, Electronics, Industrial Chemistry, Fibre, in shoes and many more. She concluded her lecture by saying Nano particles reduce weight, size and power consumption too.

Discussion was preceded for the various skill sets, jobs opportunities, career opportunities, and chances to study abroad. The speaker encouraged the students to go for Ph.D. after completing their Masters. She also advised the students to learn continuously to attain a successful career.
